Housing

Originally settled in the 1860s, the area was mostly used for orchards, brickmaking and pottery; it was in the post-World War 2 expansion that Mitcham became a true suburban area. Whilst there are some stunning period homes reminding us of Mitcham’s rich history, a large number of the homes that are now being stylishly renovated are those that were originally built in the 1950’s and 1960’s. These are most often sought by couples or families, as the aging population move on to the next stage of their lives. There are also those who are taking advantage of generous block sizes to build dual occupancy properties or substantial family homes.

Schools, Parks and Recreation

Access to excellent schools within the area, as well as successful sporting clubs at Walker Park and Heatherdale Reserve add to the attraction, as do the wide range of parklands throughout Mitcham; they vary between natural bushland walking tracks such as Somers Trail and the Yarran Dheran Nature Reserve, to the open spaces of Simpsons Reserve and the ever popular Halliday Park. The City of Whitehorse maintains approx. 170 playgrounds for the enjoyment of its residents, and a good percentage of these are found in Mitcham.

Transport, Shopping and Dining

In recent years there has also been the addition of urban style apartment complexes adding to the Mitcham streetscape. These high density housing options predominantly centre around the fully refurbished Mitcham Railway Station providing quick and easy travel to the Melbourne CBD. Many of these apartments are occupied by young professional couples who want the benefits of being accessible to the city during the week whilst also being within close proximity to popular weekend destinations such as the Yarra Valley, Dandenong Ranges and Mornington Peninsula. Britannia Mall has been given new life in recent times and a range of chic cafes provide a place to enjoy between shopping at the Coles complex or along Whitehorse Road. The Rangeview shops on Mitcham Road also have great cafes and a local IGA supermarket.
